Band History
Jack Johnson was born on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. His father, Jeff Johnson was a famous surfer so Jack started surfing as well. He started surfing and skating when he was five years old. At the age of seventeen, he became the youngest invitee to make the surfing finals at the Pipeline Masters on Oahu's north shore. One week later, he suffered a surfing accident at Pipeline. He needed almost 150 stiches to repair the damage to his back when he landed on sharp coral. After the accident he said, "I like to joke that I hit my head so hard that that's why I'm so mellow, but I think it did mellow me out." Jack attended the University of California, Santa Barbara where he graduated with a degree in film. His first song would be recorded with G Love on his album, Philadelphonic (1999). Ben Harper's producer, J.P. Plunier heard Jack's singing and worked with him for his debut album Brushfire Fairytales (2001). Now, Jack is trying tobe as eco friendly as possible. They have refillable water bottle stations and all of their merchandise is eco-friendly. The album, Sleep Through The Static was recorded with 100% solar energy. On a sunny day, the solar powered Brushfire Record Studio powers itself along with a few of it's neighbors. All of the electrical appliances are energy efficient and all of the furniture is secondhand. They record using vintage tape machines powered with their state of the art solar energy panels.
