Early Life

Tony Perez was born on May 14, 1942 in Ciego de Ávila, Cuba.

He grew up in the small town of Central de Violeta. His father was a sugar-factory worker

and Tony seemed to be destined to follow in his father's profession. He got a break when

Reds' scout Tony Pacheco noticed him while he played with a factory baseball team.

At age 17, he signed with the Cincinnati Reds. His only signing bonus was a $2.50 exit Visa fee.
